Interstitial lung disease (ILD) is an umbrella term which encapsulates many different lung conditions. The most common of these is known as idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). Other ILDs include:
- Sarcoidosis
- Asbestos
- Silicosis
- Allergic alveolitis otherwise known as ‘Farmers lung’
- Hypersensitivity pneumonitis
- Pleuroparenchymal fibroelastosis
- and many others..
ILD comprises more than 300 distinct disorders. All of these involve scarring or inflammation of the interstitial lung tissue and affects the volume of oxygen that can reach the bloodstream via the respiratory system.
